The life of the gathering

"A proper rum punch doesn't just quench thirst -- it starts the celebration."

— The Mixologist

Carol Warner — younger sister of Joan Prince, The Caribbean Princess — grew up in the same kitchen as her sister, at Mommie Helen’s side. But where Joan fell in love with the stove, Carol fell in love with the glass.

Her rum punch is the stuff of family legend. One sour, two sweet, three strong, four weak — the old island rhyme is only the beginning, because Carol’s punch has a balance that relatives have tried, and failed, to copy for decades. It’s the first thing requested at every gathering, and the recipe is already part of this collection.

Then there’s her ginger beer — fiery, fresh-grated, and unapologetic. No holiday table in the family is set without it, and no bottle ever survives the night.

Both are headed to the family’s marketplace, where her rum punch and ginger beer will be among the very first offerings — poured from recipes that have never once been written down until now.

Second generation of the Desire Food story, and the reason no family celebration starts until her pitcher is on the table.
