Mommie Helen

Where it all began

"A pot of food on the stove is a love letter to your family."

— The Matriarch

Mommie Helen is where the Desire Food story begins.

Born in the Caribbean and raised in a kitchen that never seemed to stop moving, she learned to cook by watching, tasting, and being trusted with small jobs that grew larger as her skill grew. By the time she had her own family, she had developed a style that was unmistakably hers — generous, unhurried, and grounded in the produce and proteins of the islands.

She didn’t write her recipes down. She taught them the way they had been taught to her — by standing beside her daughter at the stove and saying “now you try.” The spinach cakes, the crab backs, the pirogues — these came from her hands first.

Every dish in this collection traces back, in one way or another, to Mommie Helen’s kitchen. She is the root of the family tree, and the reason the food still tastes like home.
